Papua New Guinea Hearts for Australia Fire Appeal has raised almost K616,000, appeal organisers said.
The Australian bushfire appeal team will be carrying out fundraising activities in the next six to eight weeks to reach the targeted amount of K5 million. Deputy chairman of the appeal committee, Samson Komati, said the fundraising team will continue to coordinate and collect contributions by the individuals, businesses houses and other organisations throughout the country.
A total of K17,000 was donated to the PNG Hearts for Australia Appeal committee by three companies and a family adding to a total of K617,372 given in Port Moresby. The committee clarified that donations would be given to Foreign Affairs Ministry which will then give to the prime minister to be presented to the Australian government.
The Kokopo-Vunamami urban local level government, under the leadership of the Kokopo city mayor Benjamin Mesmin Murliu, raised more than K13,000 for its Australia bushfire appeal.
Over K38,000 was raised by East New Britain (ENB) for the Australia Bushfire appeal. Appeal chairman Nicholas Larme said they have a target of K100,000 to reach by the end of the month-long appeal on Feb 14.
A hire car company in Lae has donated K10,000 to the ‘Morobe for Australia Bushfire Appeal’ drive.
